The Precariat: The New Dangerous Class? 'in conversation' with Dr Guy Standing

Tuesday, 11 October 2011
17:30 - 18:30
The Work Foundation, 21 Palmer Street, London SW1H 0AD

Changes in the economy and labour market institutions have created a new class - The Precariat, individuals who are living and working precariously – with profound consequences for society.

For the Precariat, employment constitutes little more than a series of short-term jobs, without recourse to stable occupational identities or careers, stable social protection or protective regulations relevant to them. They include migrants, but also locals. Increasingly frustrated and potentially dangerous because they have no voice, vulnerable to the siren calls of extreme political parties, the precariat could produce new instabilities in society.

As part of The Work Foundation’s Bottom Ten Million programme which examines in-work poverty in the UK, we were delighted to welcome Dr Guy Standing, author of The Precariat: The New Dangerous Class? and Professor of Economic Security at University of Bath, to discuss his topical new book, the dangers of this newly emerging class, and how he believes the precariat can become re-engaged.
