Managing long-term health conditions in the workplace
How would you respond if an employee told you they had been diagnosed with a long-term health condition? What support could you offer?
This summit was free to attend.
Many long-term health conditions are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40. For you, this is the point where experience and talent make these individuals highly valuable employees. Losing them at this stage means losing their skills and knowledge, as well as your investment in their training and development. With long-term conditions expected to rise dramatically over the next few years, this will be a situation you find yourself facing more frequently. Did you know…
• One in three people in the UK have long-term health problems?
• The working lives of those with conditions, like multiple sclerosis, end, on average, 18 years earlier than those in good health?
• In 2011-12, £9bn was paid out by employers in sickness and absences related costs?
The summit is designed for senior HR management and those with responsibility for staff health and welfare.
Why did they attend?
'Employee Support. Good Business Sense’ was a half-day interactive summit. We considered how those with long-term health conditions can be retained as productive employees – benefiting you and them. Major employers, including BT (‘MS Employer of the Year’) and EDF Energy, and welfare experts worked with our delegates, looking at workplace problems and how to resolve them. They were joined by employees who successfully manage both their career and their health and the Minister for Welfare Reform responsible for developing policies to support those with long-term health conditions, Lord Freud.
By the end of the day our delegates were armed with knowledge of the employment implications of long-term illness and a range of solutions to the management challenges they pose.
