Many organisations are developing strategies and activities which they are terming Open Innovation. With key contributions from BAE System’s Dr John Golightly, and Europe General manager of leading open innovation platform Innocentive, Simon Schneider, a workshop at the Work Foundation yesterday morning explored where organisations are on their open innovation journey, and where they would like to be.

Research on Open Innovation from the Work Foundation’s Big Innovation Centre, with 11 leading corporations, set the scene, along with practical examples of crowdsourcing ideas and solutions from Innocentive.

With a group spanning across disciplines and sectors, rather than primarily ‘innovation’ professionals, there was lively debate on how a range of departments could support or undertake their own Open Innovation projects and activities. There were some particularly interesting contributions from public and voluntary sector participants regarding the ‘translation’ of key open innovation concepts for their sectors.

Many seemed convinced of the potential opportunities for utilising open innovation in their organisations, whether or not they were currently undertaking activities under that banner. There was some consensus regarding the importance of individual people skills and organisational culture to successfully taking forward open innovation.

The Work Foundation’s research on Open Innovation, through the Big Innovation Centre, will continue through to 2014.

• What is ‘open innovation’ and is it right for your organisation?
• Where does your open innovation strategy fit against leading corporate practice?
• What kinds of techniques and approaches are leading corporations taking to open innovation?
• How can people management practices and activities support more open innovation?
