Why reinvent the wheel?

The United Kingdom, according to HM Treasury and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) publications, has a productivity problem. If we closed this gap, the rhetoric goes, every person in the country would be £6,000 a year better off. Why reinvent the wheel? just work harder, work smarter and we will become wealthier and more fulfilled in one fell swoop.
