These areas can certainly not be relied on to drive growth today. As we set out within our recent paper Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship in 2020, the challenge in the recovery will be to rebuild our economic model around investment and innovation with little direct public money.

A key element of this will be ensuring that the economy translates bright ideas in universities into new products and services, new business ventures and new jobs. The UK must develop a translational infrastructure that bridges the gap between universities and industry in order to provide a business-focused capacity and capability that bridges research and technology commercialisation. Other countries already have such infrastructure, for example the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft in Germany.

Hermann Hauser is an entrepreneur who has helped four of the companies that he has worked with become billion dollar companies. He recently completed an assessment of The Current and Future Role of Technology and Innovation Centres in the UK. Central to this assessment was the discussion of a fundamental weakness within our innovation system:

The UK has a science capability second only to the US: an undoubted source of competitive advantage. However, it falls short on translating scientific leads into leading positions in new industries.

He will talk about his experiences working with companies to create and support innovative ideas emerging from research, and how the UK might correct its critical weakness in this area by drawing on the institutional arrangements of our trading partners.

Social Capital: Do relationships in the workplace matter?

The Event

In the 21st century it is not just human capital that matters to successful organisations but also social capital: building and sustaining strong personal and professional networks. Social capital can act as an enhancer of wellbeing as well as a protective factor when faced with adverse circumstances e.g. economic uncertainty, downsizing, lack of control or autonomy. Internal support networks can help employees navigate through uncertain times and strengthen their resilience, so what can employers do to encourage mutual support?

Building on the growing interest between organisational social capital and health, this workshop will look at how modern organisations can support/create social capital within the workplace, and will discuss how organisational social capital may be used as a buffer against workplace stress.

Some of the questions that will be asked include:

What are the mechanisms that can help an organisation to generate, sustain and increase social capital?

How can individual managers or management practices as a whole shape these mechanisms?

What are the business benefits of supporting organisational social capital?

Speakers:

Stephen Bevan, managing director, The Work Foundation

Tatiana Quadrello, senior researcher, The Work Foundation

Guest speakers to be confirmed

Why should people attend?

The aim of this event is to provide our partners with insights to inform their own organisation’s practice and an opportunity to learn the views of others through a lively and provocative debate.

This event is exclusively for partners of The Work Foundation and there is no fee to attend.

The ACAS Code contains a disciplinary procedure similar to the statutory one, but the grievance procedure has changed, with the loss of the post employment grievance. There are no specified procedures for non-disciplinary dismissals such as redundancy and sickness.
This workshop will look at the changes introduced by the Code and its supporting guidance notes as well as procedures for non-disciplinary dismissals.

Report Launch

The Event

The Work Foundation will be launching their final and fourth paper in the Future of HR Research series at the HRN Europe Conference: Transform 2010 conference in October 2010. The Future of HR programme has explored how staff in twenty first century service organisations should be effectively managed to achieve and sustain high performance in the context of an increasingly sophisticated citizen and customer base.

This session represents the culmination of two years of research by The Work Foundation into what makes for a healthy employment relationship, and the relative roles of the key players in people management – HR, leaders and line managers.

The programme has included an extensive literature review of past and current thinking about the employment relationship; a Delphi exercise looking at the future of work and the elements likely to be shaping the deal in 2010; qualitative research in our sponsor organisations; and the development of a framework for considering the implications for people management. The session will present our key findings and highlight key implications for HR, leaders and line managers for debate.

The fees are:

Two Day £1595 (includes networking dinner and network membership)

Day Ticket £845

The Workshop

‘High Performance Working’ places people and their skills centre-stage. In a report recently produced for UK Commission for Employment and Skills, it was found that policies and practices in high performance workplaces were underpinned by a philosophy of people management that emphasised autonomy, participation and learning.

There is now a considerable body of literature on how the ways people are managed at work affects their motivation and their productivity. More recently, the emphasis has moved away from a preoccupation with people management practices towards a wider appreciation of what organisations intend and what employees believe. And yet it is still the case that relatively few organisations operate what might be termed High Performance Systems or approaches. Something stops wider uptake and this workshop explores both the arguments for and the potential barriers against adoption.

Some of the questions that will be asked include:

The question is no longer why should organisations adopt high performance approaches but why don’t they?

Just what gets organisations started and how do they get a high performance approach embedded?

What are the barriers that get in the way of high performance working?

Why should people attend?

The aim of this event is to provide our partners with insights to inform their own organisation’s practice and an opportunity to learn the views of others through a lively and provocative debate.

This event is exclusively for partners with The Work Foundation

and there is no fee to attend.

To reserve your place on this event, please email partnership@theworkfoundation.com and include your name, company, job title, email address and telephone number.

A 2020 Future for Manu-Services

The Event

Across the OECD, manufacturing firms are integrating high value services with advanced manufacturing to secure competitive advantage. In the US 60 per cent of manufacturing firms have taken this route compared with just 1 per cent in China. Yet the evidence suggests that some findings struggle to realise the full benefits.

This event will explore how organisations can successfully adapt to this business model and what role public policy could have in helping them do so.

This event is exclusively for partners with The Work Foundation and there is no fee to attend.

To reserve your place on this event, please email partnership@theworkfoundation.com and include your name, company, job title, email address and telephone number.
