The Socio-Economic Centre provides high quality applied research and strategic advice focused on labour market disadvantage.
The current priorities include youth unemployment, spatial regeneration and disadvantage, and the impact of skills. The new Director will be expected to help shape and deliver the next five year research strategy for the Centre as a central element of The Work Foundation’s growth and development strategy as part of the Lancaster University.
Working with a dynamic and committed research team, you will:
• Provide intellectual leadership and development of the Centre;
• Develop and deliver the Centre’s programmes and projects to time and budget;
• Act as the public face of the Centre;
• Contribute to contemporary debates about labour market disadvantage in the UK and beyond.
As well as developing the Centre’s research programmes and profile, you will as part TWF’s leadership team facilitate cross –working within TWF and nurture constructive long term relationships with the rest of the University and with other key national and international institutions.
You will have a proven ability to take secure funding for research projects, excellent communication skills and a proven track record of engagement with, and influence on, policy makers and organisations.

The Work Foundation is a leading provider of research-based analysis, knowledge exchange and policy advice in the UK and beyond. Our Socio-Economic Centre produces policy focused research on labour markets, skills, and cities. We are now seeking two talented senior researchers to join our successful and growing team
You will have excellent research skills to develop and lead policy focused research projects. Knowledge of one of our key research areas - skills, labour markets, cities - is essential, as is business development experience. The ability to build relationships with policymakers, funders and the media is also important. As a Senior Researcher you will be expected and encouraged to develop new ideas for applied research, win funding , and build an external reputation for expertise and authority. We are currently launching two new research programmes, one focused on skills and one on social investment, and you will have the opportunity to lead and develop them.

We are seeking a researcher with experience in research or policy in the areas of labour markets, skills, and cities. We are particularly keen to hear from applicants with skills in project evaluation. The researcher would produce high quality research which impacts on policy and practice. Knowledge and experience of current policy agendas are important. This post also requires strong applied research skills and the ability to develop implications for policy and practice based on a robust evidence base. Business development experience would also be an advantage.
