Recent Research

The demise of MG Rover is back in the spotlight again following the government’s referral of the Phoenix Four to the Serious Fraud Office. MG Rover went into administration in May 2005 with the loss of 6300 jobs directly at the Longbridge plant, making it the largest mass redundancy for over 20 years.

The subsequent report in 2008 by The Work Foundation together with Birmingham University analysed the impact of the closure on the workers themselves and their communities. The report makes clear recommendations for current government policy based on the lessons learned from the collapse of MG Rover.
