The Event:
The economic outlook is becoming increasing bleak. Growth forecasts are being slashed, both here and across the industrialised world. Unemployment is on the rise again. Concern is rising that the UK faces a long period of low growth even if the short term outlook improves. And all of this will put extra pressure on the public finances. The policy choices are not easy. Does the Chancellor stick with his plans to reduce the structural deficit and hope the Bank’s expected resort to “quantitative easing” will put the economy back on track? Or in the face of unexpectedly difficult global forces should he demonstrate flexibility, and bring forward a fiscal package for jobs and growth?
George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, has announced he will deliver his Autumn Statement on 29th November 2011. This event will review the prospects for the economy and the labour market, assess and comment on the Autumn Statement, and set out what else the Chancellor could have done to give business, investors, consumers and entrepreneurs more confidence in the future.
