The Event
Graduate employment has once again been making the headlines. A new report, The way we’ll work, exploring future labour market trends and what it means for employers, universities and graduates, is being launched by University Alliance on 27 March.
The event is an opportunity to bring together a select group of experts on labour markets, university policy and social mobility to discuss and debate the evidence in the report and how the UK needs to prepare itself now in order to grow our economy and ensure a bright future for more young people.
The way we’ll work clearly demonstrates that if the UK is to grow its globally competitive workforce we need to increase the number of graduates and improve social mobility by creating opportunities for genuine career progression.
Contrary to popular belief, the major economic indicators suggest that there is a shortage of graduates in the UK, not too many. Demand for going to university is high. Youth unemployment is at record levels. Social mobility is at a standstill. Applying logic would see the total number of university places increased. However, they have been quietly cut by around 24,000 places compared with last year. With our global competitors investing heavily in higher education we need to tackle this issue now to avoid the UK being left behind.
