This event launched one of the first UK studies to explore the issue of presenteeism – coming to work unwell - and individual performance.
The event in detail
The high cost of sickness absence in the UK is well documented. But could sickness presence (coming to work when sufficiently unwell to have justified staying home), adversely affect organisations just as much? What makes someone go to work if they are not well enough and how exactly does it relate to lower performance? Lead author Katherine Ashby presented new research findings answering these questions while the context of health and wellbeing was set by Stephen Bevan. Although much research exists on sickness absence, sickness presence has remained little understood. The author talked about the links between sickness presence, sickness absence and performance, exploring the factors that are associated with sickness presence. Conducted by The Work Foundation for AXA PPP healthcare, this research is one of the first UK studies to investigate and consider ways to address this important issue.
