Three Years On: Revisiting ex-MG Rover workers

Introduction
Following the 2005 closure of the MG Rover plant in Birmingham, The Work Foundation and the Birmingham Business School have tracked former employees to investigate how their working lives and overall wellbeing have been affected.
The event in detail
At this event we will launch the findings of our joint-research into the aftermath of the Longbridge closure – over the period 2005-2008. The research addresses the following questions:
- How many former MG Rover employees are in work now?
- Do they have better jobs now than they had previously with MG Rover?
- Are they earning more or less than before?
- How effective were the emergency measures that were put in place to help these workers back into the labour market?
- What sectors are they working in - manufacturing or other?
- Have they had to leave the West Midlands to find work?
- What are the key lessons for policy makers?
- What are the lessons for other regions and industries facing similar difficult times?
Richard Burden, the local Member of Parliament for the Northfield Constituency, is hosting the event. In addition to a brief presentation from the authors of the report, speakers at the event will include former MG Rover workers, local training providers and policy-makers, as well as researchers from The Work Foundation’s Ideopolis programme.
