Under Pressure: Leadership for our times
Tuesday, 12 May 2009
The Work Foundation, 21 Palmer Street, London SW1H 0AD
Introduction
Leadership, never easy, just got a whole lot harder and a whole lot more necessary. This conference brought together the personal reflections of top leaders such as Gordon Frazer from Microsoft UK, Des Thurlby, Jaguar Land Rover and Denise Milani of the Metropolitan Police Service with insights from the largest study of leadership behaviours currently underway in the UK, carried out by The Work Foundation.
The event in detail
It is time for new models of leadership to emerge - with less focus on the rational, self-interested individual and more on the collective, ethical business of building a practical culture of leadership.
This conference, which aimed at leaders in business and public sector organisations, organisational development specialists, HR practitioners and business strategists, included sessions on:
- Leadership in Microsoft UK - Gordon Frazer, Managing Director, in conversation with Will Hutton, executive vice chair of The Work Foundation
- Leadership for high performance: what the research is telling us - Penny Tamkin, Programme Director of the leadership team released the latest findings emerging from the research.
- Under pressure: personal accounts and lessons learned - Denise Milani, Director of Diversity and Citizen Focus Directorate, Metropolitan Police Service, Mark Hackett, CEO, Southampton University Hospital NHS Trust and Des Thurlby, HR Director, Land Rover shared their personal stories of leading under pressure.
- Evolving leadership: Eva Eisenschimmel , Alex Dower and Billy Anderson, participants of the research, discussed the evolving nature of leadership in their organisations. How has leadership developed over time and what the drivers were for change?
