Introduction

The 2009 Ideopolis and OECD conference was held at the Wellcome Collection Conference centre on 2 July 2009. There were over 100 delegates attending the day-long event from countries world-wide including Australia, South Africa, Canada, Italy , Spain and the UK, making it a truly international event.

The conference launched original research from The Work Foundation and OECD LEED programme on how UK and international cities should be leading the way out of the recession. 

The  conference focused on:

• What has been the impact of the recession on city economies in the UK and the OECD?
• How are international cities sustaining their economies in the recession? And what can UK cities do to emulate their success?
• How can cities sustain their focus on the long-run drivers of prosperity – such as innovation, skills and ‘knowledge intensive industries – in a recession where there is increased pressure to focus on short-run management?
• How can cities lead the way out of recession?
